Start with small steps forward.
Rather than looking at your job search as a major undertaking, set a series of small goals that will help you accomplish the big objective. Take it day-by-day and set your goals: determine your skills and interests; update and perfect your resume; update your LinkedIn profile; start to apply for jobs; begin to network and follow-up. If you look at it this way, you can make lots of progress in just a few weeks.Â
Plan specific times to work on your goals.
By setting aside time and putting it on your calendar, you'll be reminded that you have made a commitment to yourself and you'll be more likely to stick to it. Start by doing a small part of what matters most for your goal, and get it done! If a conflict occurs, don't let it derail you. Instead, re-up your commitment.
Enjoy your free time.
Make a point to acknowledge and enjoy the free time that you have. Plan fun events and celebrate milestones. Create a clear separation for the time you spend working on your job search. This will help you balance your life and distinguish between personal and work time. Â
Tap into the enthusiasm, energy, and motivation of others.
There are so many ways to stay motivated and you'll find that you can really benefit from the energy of others—both virtually and personally. Sign up for positive, motivational job search news letters and blogs; visit or email your college counseling office for ideas; meet friends for a cup of coffee and review each others cover letters; find a job search Coach to help you where you need it most; reach out to LinkedIn contacts and join groups.
Stick to it.
Develop a "Plan of Action" and stick to it. Sure, you'll make changes and your plan and targets will evolve, but the act of working it on a regular basis will pay off.
With a little organization and a strategic approach in place, you can move your internship or job search ahead and still have plenty of time to enjoy spring.
Happy job hunting!
