1. Look at the big picture…
Choosing between two job opportunities is a lot like looking at art in a museum – sometimes you need to take a step back to appreciate the big picture. It’s all about perspective! Think about the broader implications of both roles: how does each position align with your career goals? Does either opportunity afford you the ability to integrate your values or passions into your work? Who are the companies? What do they stand for and how would you fit in? Find out about their culture – are they casual or corporate, local or international? Speak to employees if you have connections there to get inside information; if you don’t know anyone on the inside, check out their Glassdoor reviews. Can you picture yourself growing there?
2. Ask Someone Who Cares…About You
People who know you best can often share incredible wisdom and insight into what you should do…and sometimes just articulating your thoughts out loud can lead you to see that you already know the right choice. Asking a few people who care about you to help you think through your options can also help you to disperse some of the anxiety that comes with making a big decision like this--so call in back up! You might be surprised at the perspectives your relatives and friends will offer.
3. Make a List of ‘Pros’ & ‘Cons’
Once you’ve considered both options carefully and received feedback from your family and friends, it’s time to determine the winner. Who offers more of the things that matter most to you? Think about things like stability, career growth potential, benefits, continuing education opportunities, and company culture. What role will give you the chance to work on projects that inspire you? Which role puts you closer to the career path that you envision for yourself? Who pays more? If salary is the only thing keeping you from choosing a position you know you’ll love, remember that this is often negotiable!
At the end of the day, remember that people fantasize about being in your shoes! Deciding between two great positions isn’t easy, but you are in control of your own destiny. So, look at the big picture, talk to people who know you, and tally up the pros and cons. Just don’t drag your feet too long or your dream job might slip through your fingers.
