With Mother’s Day this weekend, it’s a great time to talk about career ideas for working moms. If you’re constantly finding yourself torn between keeping your career going and being around for your kids, we're here to offer you some creative and inspiring ideas that will help you have the best of both worlds. Here are 12 great careers that fit in well with raising a family and can help you maintain a nice income at the same time:
1. Translator or Language Tutor
Do you speak a second language? If you do, you could be getting paid for translating a company training manual or policy into a second language. Or, put your knowledge to great use by teaching others. Freelance language teachers or tutors can bring in impressive hourly fees. Â
2. Blogger or Vlogger
YouTube can be a business these days. If you love talking about fashion, travel, health & fitness, or even interior design—start your own blog or YouTube Channel. If you’re passionate about the content you put out, your subscribers will grow. You could be collecting a paycheck from YouTube and getting sponsored by brands for talking about things you already love.
3. Real Estate Agent
This is a highly flexible job that gives you a lot of control over how much money you make and how many hours you work.
4. Executive or Administrative Assistant
Administrative jobs are typically lower stress and don’t require you to work crazy hours. If you are looking for a job that lets you work a typical 9-5 schedule where you can leave promptly at the same time every day, this could be a great option. Working as an Executive Assistant for a CEO or VP is also a great option and it usually pays a lot more than a base level administrative job.
5. Freelance Writer
Freelance writers can make a pretty decent income—if you’re good at what you do and you're able to show professional samples of your work. There are tons of companies who are in business to write content for other businesses and organizations. And many of these companies hire freelance writers to work for them. This means you could be supervising a play date and cranking out an article at the same time.
6. Social Media Manager
Social Media jobs are springing up all over the place. The great news for moms is that this kind of work can be done from anywhere—including your kitchen table or the waiting room at the pediatrician’s office. If you’ve become a guru at Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.… you could be making money managing social media accounts for someone else. You'll be especially marketable if you've got a communications or marketing background.
7. Teacher
Want to work the exact same schedule as your kids and have summers off? Enough said. If you have bachelor’s degree, you can parlay that into a teaching career. If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, look for administrative or clerical jobs through your local school board. You’ll still enjoy the same schedule and benefits.
8. Dental Hygienist
Good luck getting a dentist appointment after 4pm or on a Friday. If you’re looking for a reliable career that offers a steady income and unbeatable hours, look no further.
9. Nanny or Caregiver
This is one of the few jobs where you could potentially bring your child(ren) to work with you on a regular basis and enjoy a larger than usual amount of day-to-day flexibility.
10. Fitness Instructor
Work as much or as little as you want. Certified fitness instructors can make serious money! Teach a few group classes a couple of nights a week and keep your days free. Or, go for private yoga lessons or personal training and keep your client list as small or as big as you want. $40-$60 for an hour of work isn’t too bad…
11. Photographer
Do you take a million photos of you kids? Why not earn a little money doing something you already do every day? Freelance photographers can earn big bucks for a few hours of work. If your friends and family are always telling you how amazing your photos look, turn that into a side business! If you don’t have a lot of experience but you love photography, you can take free tutorials and affordable online courses to refine your skills.
12. Online Boutique Owner
Are you crafty? Do you make great things that your friends say they’d be willing to pay for? Sites like Etsy and Zazzle have made it easy for anyone to open an online business and sell everything from homemade lip balm, to pet products and tote bags.
It’s hard to find a job that magically aligns with your family’s financial needs and a mom’s crazy schedule. However, some of these ideas may help you get a little closer to finding work/life balance while still enjoying a career—and taking home a respectable paycheck.
